William T. Blacketer, 1918 – 2006

William T. Blacketer, 88, of Sunset Home (formerly of 1120 So. 21st and RR #2, Canton, MO) died Wednesday, November 1 [2006] at 9:25 a.m. at the home.

He was born May 25, 1918 in Rockport, IL, the son of Thomas Edward and Lula Hardy Blacketer. On June 18, 1938, he married Marjorie S. Schmidt in Louisiana, MO. She preceded him in death on February 22, 1991.

Mr. Blacketer retired from Moorman Mfg. Co. where he worked for 30 years in the stock room. He was an avid fisherman and hunter.

Survivors include 2 daughters, Mrs. Alesa Spangler and her husband Jeff, Quincy; Mrs. Judy Raithel and her husband Jim, Quincy; 4 grandchildren, Jeanette Goodapple & her husband Richard, Quincy; Joy Middendorf & her husband Chris, Quincy; Rhonda Greene & her husband Brennan, Tremont, IL; B. J. Spangler and his wife Angie, Quincy; 4 great-grandchildren, Brandon Epping and his wife Desiree, Quincy; Caleb, Joshua and Elijah Greene, Tremont, IL; 4 sisters, Lucy Hoskins, Rockport, IL; Marie Garner, New Port Richey, FL; Evelyn Garner, Hannibal, MO and Delores Blacketer, Quincy.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Earl “Gene” Blacketer.

Funeral Services will be Saturday, November 4, at 1:00 p.m. in the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home with the Pastor Bryan Meado officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 4 – 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Quincy Memorial Park. Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association.

Francis E. Viar, 1919 – 2010

Francis E. Viar, age 90, formerly of 904 Hillside Ct., Quincy, died Monday, January 11, 2010, at 1:05 a.m. in River Bluff Nursing Home, Rockford, IL.

He was born April 20, 1919, in Camp Point, Illinois, the son of Austin and Evie Phillips Viar. On March 31, 1951, he married Martha “Mert” Wells in Madison Park Christian Church. She survives.

Mr. Viar was a charter member of and helped to construct Grandview Baptist Church, where he served for many years on various church boards.

A veteran of WWII, he proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1941-1945, earning the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Ribbon and pre-Pearl Harbor Bronze Star. He was stationed on the islands of Kodiak and Amchitka in the Aleutians and built runways for airplanes in Alaska. By the time of his discharge, he had earned the rank of sergeant and ended his tour of duty by training new recruits at Camp Robinson, Arkansas.

Mr. Viar worked in construction for over 50 years; was employed by Brocksmith, Shortridge and Viar Construction Companies; and built homes throughout Quincy and the surrounding area.

Survivors include 2 daughters, Doneta Lewis of Rockford, IL, and Bobette (Jay) Platt of Munster, IN; 4 grandsons, Brandon Platt, Blake Platt, Jeremy Lewis and Brooks Platt; a granddaughter, Gina Lewis; and 2 sisters, Elorie (Carl) Boling of Camp Point and Mary (Sterling) Reynolds of Bowen, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Virginia Hoover; and 3 brothers, Cecil, Elmo and Eldon.

Services: 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 16, 2010, at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home with the Rev. Brian Hutchinson officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

Visitation: 4:00-6:00 p.m. Friday at Hansen-Spear

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established at a later date

Joye Elizabeth Viar, 85, of 1400 N. 17th, died Thursday (Feb. 19, 2009) in her home. She was born Dec. 1, 1923 in Liberty, a daughter of Julius and Theresa (Bauer) Heberlein. She married Robert L. Viar on Jan. 20, 1946, in the Zion Lutheran Church Parsonage. He died Oct. 4, 1995.

Joye graduated from Payson Seymour High School. After school, Joye worked at various small jobs and then went to work at Browers. She worked there for three years during World War II while her future husband was in the U.S. Army. Three weeks after his return home, they were married and had nearly 50 happy years together. Joye also worked 27 years at Motorola and 10 years at Calcium Carbonate, now J.M. Huber, retiring in 1986. Joye always enjoyed her time at work and made many lasting friends there. Joye was a volunteer at RSVP and also at Blessing Hospital. She delivered Meals on Wheels and loved to play cards and dominoes. Joye was a member of the American Legion Post 640 Auxiliary in Liberty for 63 years. She was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Quincy. Joye taught Sunday school at Zion Lutheran Church, where she was a member, and also belonged to the Jolly Seniors at Faith Christian Church.

Joye is survived by one daughter, Carol Ames of Quincy; one grandson, Robert Parsons of Quincy; two great-granddaughters, Brittany Nicole Parsons and Pyper Elizabeth Zimmerman; one brother, Dean Heberlein and his wife, Eldonna, of Barry; and a special cousin, Helen B. Nichols of Cape Coral, Fla. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. In addition to her husband, Joye was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Mildred Heberlein.

SERVICES: 11 a.m. Monday in the Zion Lutheran Church in Liberty, conducted by the Rev. Amy Luckey. Interment will be in Xander Cemetery in Liberty. VISITATION: 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday in the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home and on Monday from 10 a.m. until the services at the church. MEMORIALS: Zion Lutheran Church or to the Blessing Foundation for Hospice.

ARRANGEMENTS: Duker and Haugh Funeral Home. Condolences may be expressed online at www.whig.com.
