Mrs. Matilda (Stanley) Saxbery 1807-1878

Barry Adage, January 4, 1879, Page 4, Column 1 -
Mrs. Matilda Saxbery, aged 71 years, an old resident, (58 years) in Pleasant Vale Township, and the first woman married in the county under the license law in 1827, died the 23rd of Dec. Her funeral was preached by the Rev. Crews, a very large concourse of people attending. The good old lady attended the Old Settlers’ Meeting in October and shook hands with about 500 persons. She was the mother of 13 children and has out-lived all of them but four. Her husband died about six years ago.

Mrs. Martha (Brackley-Saxbury) Brown 1849-1907

Mrs. Martha Saxbury Brown passed away Sunday morning after suffering for several months from a cancer on her face. Funeral services to be held on Monday at 2 p.m. at the Methodist Church with the Reverend H.P. Beek in charge. Burial at Shearer Cemetery, New Canton, IL

Martha A. Brackley was born in Wood Co. Ohio July 27, 1849. In 1857 she came with her parents to Pike Co. Illinois. Here she was married to Benjamin Saxbury in 1867. To this union was born three sons and one daughter. Frank, Albert, William and Nellie.

Mr. Saxbury passed away in 1883. In 1885 she married Marion Peter Brown. She was a member of the Christian Church in Cincinnati in 1897. Surviving are three sons and the daughter and 15 grandchildren.

Sarah F. (Saxbury) Havens 1864-1910

New Canton Press, January 20, 1910 - Come to Her Eternal Rest.

The funeral of Mrs. Havens was held from the Union church Thursday at 2:00 p.m., Rev. Rhodes of Barry officiating. The choir was composed of members of both churches. The pall bearers were J. E. Temple, W. ? Baucom, L. M. Baker, P. M. Godfrey, Benj. and L. Gard. The local Women’s Relief Corps gave flowers, as well as others.

Mrs. Havens has been a familiar sight to the people of New Canton for many, many years, and there are few who have lived here since the war that didn’t know her. The following obituary was read at the funeral:

Sarah F. Saxbury was born in Pike county, Illinois, October 18, 1845. She was united in marriage to Chas. S. Havens, December 22, 1864. To this union were born seven children, four sons and three daughters. One daughter has preceded her mother to the Better Land. Six children survive her: Henry, Peter, William, George, Anna and Sophrona; fifteen grandchildren, one sister and other relatives. She was a faithful and consistent member of the Christian Church , and also of Women’s Relief Corps No. 90. She was a kind and loving mother, always considerate of others in time of trouble.

Arthur Saxbury 1901-1918

Funeral services for Arthur Saxbury were held at the family residence on South Hayden St., Hannibal Mo. with the Rev. Fry officiating. Burial was in Shearer Cemetery at New Canton IL.

Mr. Saxbury was the son of Albert and Dora Rodgers Saxbury. He had left home to visit an Aunt Mrs Letha Butts of Englewood Kansas when his parents received word that he had been seriously hurt at Burns Kansas. He was taken to a hospital at Newton Kansas where he died. Heartbroken parents returned home with the remains. Was injured while riding a freight train.

John Paul Saxburry 1869-1925

Hannibal Courier-Post, June 17, 1925 - J. P. Saxburry Dies Suddenly - Hannibal Resident Drops Dead At His Home, 121 Bird Street

John P. Saxburry, 56 years old, dropped dead in his home, 121 Bird street, at 5:30 o’clock last evening. Mr. Saxbury, about a week ago returned home from a hospital where he had been receiving treatment.

C. R. Scott, coroner of Marion county was called and after viewing the body and questioning witnesses, did not hold an inquest, as death was due to heart trouble.

Mr. Saxburry is survived by his wife, Mrs. Della Saxburry, two daughters, Fern, 12 years old, and Theda, five years old and a son, John Jr. aged nine years; two sisters, Mrs. Riley Smith of Griggsville, Ill., and Mrs. Mary Branic of Pittsfield, Ill.,; two brothers, Frank and Amous Saxburry of New Canton, Ill.

The remains were removed to Smith’s funeral home, from where, at 9:30 o’clock Thursday morning, funeral services will be held, conducted by Captain Henry Buchanan of the Salvation Army. Interment will be at New Canton.

Hannibal Courier-Post, June 18, 1925 - John P. Saxburry is Buried Today

The funeral of John P. Saxburry, who died suddenly Tuesday evening, was held at 9:00 o’clock this morning from Smith’s funeral home on Broadway. Captain Henry Buchanan of the Salvation Army, was in charge of the services. The remains were taken to New Canton, Ill. for interment.

Mr. Saxburry had been in ill health for some time. He was 56 years old.

Mrs. Nellie (Saxbury) Stewart 1882-1928

Mrs. Nellie May Stewart, wife of Henry Stewart passed away this morning at her home on Valley Road at 10:45 a.m. Mrs. Stewart had been in ill health for a year but not critical. After returning to her home Tuesday from a visit with relatives she became seriously ill. Had Mrs Stewart lived until Thursday she would have been 46 yrs. old.

She was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Martha Brackley Saxbury. Born at New Canton IL Pike Co. Lived in Hannibal for 26 years. Surviving are her husband, 5 children-Mrs Pansy Pickett, Ralph, Herbert, Glenn and Irene Stewart. A grandchild Namon Pickett.

Funeral service M.E. Church. Burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery Hannibal, Mo.

Hannibal Courier-Post, August 23, 1928 - Mrs. Stewart’s Burial Friday

Funeral services over the remains of Mrs. Henry A. Stewart, who died early Wednesday morning, will be at 2:30 o’clock Friday afternoon from First Methodist Episcopal church, of which she was a member. Rev. H. J. Bane, pastor of the church, will conduct the rites, and interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery. The remains will be removed this evening from Schwart’s funeral home to the family residence on Valley road, south of Hannibal.

Had Mrs. Stewart lived until today she would have been 46 years old. She had lived in and near Hannibal for years and was well known here.

The funeral of Mrs. Henry A. Stewart, who died Wednesday morning in her home on Valley road, south of Hannibal, was held at 2:30 o’clock Friday afternoon from First Methodist Episcopal church, of which she was a member. Rev. H. J. Bane, pastor of the church, conducted the rites, and the remains were laid to rest in Mount Olivet cemetery.

Mrs. Stewart had been in failing health for about a year but her condition was not considered serious and she returned Tuesday from a visit with relatives at a distance, and a few hours following, became critically ill. She had lived in Hannibal and vicinity for a number of years.

Maud Fay (Kirtright) Gwartney 1890-1930

Maud Fay, daughter of John and Ella (Nicol) Kirtright, was born December 14, 1890, near Hadley Illinois and departed this life at her home in Atlas Township August 21, 1930, after a few days illness, aged 39 years 8 months and 7 days.

She was united in marriage to Cloyd Saxbury, September 18, 1910, after seven years they seperated and in November 1919 she was married to Milton Gwartney.

She is survived by her husband, father, mother, two sisters: Mrs. Eliza Blacketter, Idaho Falls, Idaho; Mrs. May Billings, New Canton; five brothers, Fred and George Kirtright of Hannibal, Mo.; Oscar Kirtright of Marblehead, Illinois and Edward and John Kirtright, New Canton; her maternal grandmother Mrs. Eliza Nicol, Soldiers and Sailors Home, Quincy, Ill.

Her children are Mrs. Gretta Shy, Hannibal, Mo; Gilbert and Vivian Saxbury and Harold Junior Gwartney at home and one grandchild Stella Jean Shy; one step-daughter of Kansas City, Mo.; three step-sons Lon, Edward and Milton Gwartney all of New Canton; several uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews and neices and many friends.

She united with the Methodist Church during the ministry of Rev. McAnally.

Albert Eugene Saxbury 1870-1934

Hannibal Courier-Post, March 31, 1934 - A. E. Saxbury Dies Friday - Served Two Terms As Alderman in Council.

Albert Eugene Saxbury, former alderman in the city council from the fifth ward for two years, died at 9:25 o’clock Friday evening in his home, 611 South Hayden street, at the age of 63 years, 3 months and 2 days. He had been ill since last June.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o’clock Monday afternoon from First Methodist Episcopal church of which Mr. Saxbury was a member. Dr. W. K. Chatten, pastor of the church, will conduct the rites and interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery. The Odd Fellows will have charge at the grave. The remains will be removed to the family residence, from Smith’s funeral home at 4:30 o’clock this afternoon.

Mr. Saxbury was born December 28, 1870, at New Canton, Ill. He had lived in Hannibal for many years, and was highly esteemed and honored by his wide circle of friends because of his exemplary conduct and high type of manhood. For 30 years Mr. Saxbury was employed in the Burlington railroad shops, retiring the first of last June, on account of failing health. Mr. Saxbury was a consistent member of First Methodist Episcopal church. He was affiliated with Mystic Lodge No. 17, Independent Order of Odd Fellows and with the Modern Woodmen of America.

Mr. Saxbury was a republican in politics, and was always interested in the welfare of his party and served two terms, from 1917 to 1919 and from 1919 to 1921, in the city council as alderman from the fifth ward, while J. K. Mills was mayor.

Surviving Mr. Saxbury are his wife, Mrs. Dora Saxbury; two children, John T. Saxbury and Mrs. J. J. Denkler of this city; two brothers, William Saxbury of Buffalo, Mo., and Frank Saxbury of New Canton; a step-brother, W. H. Brown of Hannibal and a step-sister, Mrs Frank Swan of Madisonville; three grandchildren and other relatives. A sister, Mrs. Henry Stewart, died in 1928.

Hannibal Courier-Post, April 2, 1934 - Crowd Attends Saxbury Rites

A large number of relatives and friends attended funeral services this afternoon for Albert E. Saxbury, former city official, which were held at 2 o’clock at First Methodist Episcopal church. Rev. W. K. Chatten, pastor, conducted the rites and interment was in Mount Olivet cemetery, with Mystic Lodge No. 17, I. O. O. F., conducting the rites of that order.

Pallbearers were Floyd Capps, Jack Hammock, Charles Paradise, Glenn Boedy, Arthur Winkler and Asa Baker.

Mr. Saxbury, former councilman from the fifth ward, died Friday evening in his home, 611 South Hayden street. He was 63 years of age.

William Benjamin Saxbury 1872-1937

Dallas County Republican, February 18, 1937 - Williams Benjamin Saxbury was born January 26, 1872, near New Canton, Illinois, and passed away February 13, 1937, at his home near Buffalo, Mo., being at the time of his death 65 years and 18 days of age.

He had been in failing health for several years but was only bed fast one week of his last three weeks of serious illness.

He was married to Barbara Elizabeth Harmison April 15, 1900, and to this union were born six children, all of whom are still living. Mrs. Ethel Buttram, of Philipsburg, Mo., Mrs. Beulah Gregg, of Buffalo, Glen of Topeka, Kansas, Harold, Buffalo, Jesse, of Bellflower, California, and Wilma Carrie at home.

He was the son of Benjamin and Martha Saxbury. His father passed away when he was a boy of only 11 years and his mother, two brothers and one sister also preceded him in death.

He was a kind and helpful husband and father and a good christian neighbor and was liked by all who knew him. He leaves to mourn his passing, his kind and devoted companion, his six children, a step-brother, W. H. Brown, of Hannibal, Mo., a step-sister, Mrs. Lora Swan, of Madisonville, Mo., seven grand children, a numbers of nieces and nephews and a host of ther relatives and friends. He bore his terrible suffering with much patience and cheerfulness which was so much help to the many carring hands that cared for him until the last. All of his children were with him in his last illness, except Jesse, who was in California.

Funeral services were conducted at Prairie Grove at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1937, by Rev. Earl T. Sechler. Burial was in the Prairie Grove cemetery under direction of L. B. Jones.

Dennis Ryan 1874-1938

Dennis Ryan, the son of Dennis and Nancy Ryan, was born in Richfield Township, April 16, 1874. Mr. Ryan was baptized into christ in the catholic church in his early youth. He was united in marriage to Miss Eva Huffman, May 15, 1904

To this union were born four children, namely: Ellis M. of Quincy, Emmett G. of Richfield, Loren W. and Eva Delores at home.

He had spent his entire life in this community. He was espically devoted to his family and home.

Besides his devoted wife and four children, he leaves three grand children: Mardelle, Donald and Mary Alice Ryan of Quincy, a sister, Mrs. Alice Cox of Richfield and a half brother, W. Cutsinger of Hannibal, Missouri and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his loss. His father and mother and three brothers, John, Alfred and Elijah have preceded him in death.

His illness, which he bore very patiently, extended over a period of two years. He departed this life very peacefully at his home, here on March 12, 1938 at the age of 63 years, 11 months and 4 days.

A form from us is gone, A voice that now is stilled, A chair is vacant in our home, That never can be filled.
