Alvin William Saxbery 1892-1979

William Alvin Saxbery, 87, of Sutter, a retired employee of Packaging Corporation of America in Quincy, died at 11:23 p.m. Monday (Nov. 5, 1979) in St. Mary Hospital in Quincy.

Mr. Saxbery was born in New Canton, Aug. 28, 1892, a son of Frank and Nancy Ancell Saxbery. He married Kitty Bird in 1921 in New Canton. She preceded him in death. He married Ellen Barre Sept. 15, 1960, in Quincy. He was a member of the Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife; a son, James of Quincy; three step-sons, Gilbert Veach of Decatur, Raymond Veach of Joliet and Donald Ruths of Quincy; a step-daughter, Mrs. Mae Lockner of Phoenix, Ariz; a sister, Mrs. James (Lucy) Garner of Maywood, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. A son, a daughter and a sister preceded him in death.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Zehander Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Woodrow McCaleb. Burial will be in Payson New Cemetery.

John T. Saxbury 1909-1980

Hannibal Courier Post, April 26, 1980 - Services for John T. Saxbury, 71, of 611 South Hayden St., will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the O’Donnell Funeral Home. The Rev. Charles Rache will be in charge. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Mr. Saxbury died 4:15 a.m. Friday at his home. He was born April 4, 1909 in Hannibal, the son of Albert E. and Dora Rogers Saxbury. He was married August 1926 to Agnes Costello in Hannibal. She preceded him in death Oct. 5, 1977.

He is survived by two sons, Michael Saxbury of St. Charles, Mo.; Paul Saxbury, Hannibal; one daughter, Mrs. Judy Morris, Center; and 10 grandchildren.

Mr. Saxbury was a retired employee of the Hercules, Inc.,in Louisiana. He was a member of the Hannibal Veterans of Foreign Wars and served during World War II.

Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

John F. Saxbury 1915-1981

Hannibal Courier Post, September 12, 1981 - Services for John F. Saxbury Sr., 65, of the Hannibal Care Center, will be 10 a.m. Monday at the O’Donnell Funeral Home. The Rev. Henry Trevathan will officiate. Burial will be in Grandview Park.

Mr. Saxbury died at 8 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.

He was born Sept. 12, 1915 in New Canton, Ill, to J. T. and Della White Saxbury.

Surviving are two sons, John Saxbury Jr. of St. Louis and Donald Saxbury of St. Louis, one sister, Mrs. Opal Parks of Hannibal, two grandchildren.

He was a retired custodian for the Hancock School District in St. Louis. He was a member of the American Legoin Post No. 55 and the V. F. W. He was a veteran of World War II.

Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Sunday at the O’Donnell Funeral Home. Military services will be 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mabel (Saxbury) Seba 1897-1982

Hannibal Courier Post, January 4, 1982 - Services for Mabel Irene Seba, 84, of 915 Union St., will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Clark Funeral Home. The Rev. Roger Briggs will be in charge. Burial will be in Grand View Burial Park.

Mrs. Seba died 9 a.m. Sunday at Levering Hospital. She was born December 10, 1897, in New Canton, Ill to Francis and Anna Sellers Saxbury. She was married to John W. Seba on Nov. 17, 1915. He preceded her in death Oct. 29, 1969.

Survivors include a son, John L. Seba, Hannibal; one brother, Ben Saxbury, Hull, Ill., and one grandchild.

Mrs. Seba was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, where she taught the TEL Class. She attended New Canton schools.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers are Art Walden, Art Cameron, Charles Person, Carl Taylor, James Dennison and Walter Baker.

Ben W. Saxbury 1900-1985

Hull - Services for Ben W. Saxbury, 85, of Hull, Ill. will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Gill-Lummis Funeral Home in Barry, Ill. Elder William Phillips will officiate. Burial will be in the Shearer Cemetery near New Canton.

Mr. Saxbury died at 8:33 a.m. May 5 at St. Mary hospital in Quincy, Ill.

He was born Feb. 11, 1900 in Cincinnati Township, Pike County, Ill to Francis and Anna Sellers Saxbury. He was married Nov. 3, 1920, to Alma Blacketter. She survives.

Other survivors incluse three sons, Ben Saxbury of Kinderhook, Ill, Richard Saxbury of Hull, Ill, and Tom of El Dara, Ill., three daughters, Ruth and Bonita, both of Tuscon, Ariz., and Phyllis of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.

Albert T. Viar 1923-1985

Quincy Herald Whig, July 29, 1985 - Albert Viar, former Liberty fire, police chief dead at 61

Liberty, Ill. - Albert T. “Ab” Viar Sr., 61, formerly chief of the Liberty police and fire departments, died unexpectedly at 5 a.m. Sunday (July 28, 1985) in Quincy’s Blessing Hospital.

Mr. Viar was born Aug. 14, 1923, in Clayton, a son of Owen and Emma Allensworth Viar. He married Ruth Hodges June 27, 1942. He later married Betty Staffy Brown, July 7, 1985, in Griggsville. She survives.

Mr. Viar was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church. He was a 32nd-degree Mason and a member of the Eastern Star Masonic Lodge of Liberty and the Liberty Lions Club.

Mr. Viar was an employee of the Gardner-Denver branch of Cooper Industries in Quincy for 33 years. He retired in August 1979. He was a policeman in Liberty for 30 years. He served as the Liberty Police and Fire Chief and deputy coroner. His career was marked by the May 30, 1980, robbery of $15,000 from the Farmers Bank of Liberty by John Larry Ray. Ray was later captured.

Surviving are four sons, Albert Viar Jr. of Quincy, Leroy Viar of Sullivan, Charles “Pepper” Viar of Nashville, Tenn., and Ronald “Corky” Viar of Liberty; three daughters, Mrs. Judy Saxbury and Mrs. Betty Jo Brown, both of Tulsa, Okla., and Mrs. Mary Sheurman of Liberty; two brothers, Robert Viar and Raymond Viar, both of Quincy; a sister, Mrs. Goldie Robbins of Camp Point; two stepsons, Carl Brown of Griggsville and Charles Brown of Champaign; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Carolyn Sims of Jacksonville; 21 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and an infant son.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Zion Lutheran Church in Liberty, by the Rev. Warren Gritzke and Rev. Bill Renner. Burial will be in Xander Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Liberty Fire Department.

Mrs. Augusta (Mitchell) Saxbury 1903-1985

The Bowling Green Times, Bowling Green, MO, August 7, 1985 - Rites for Mrs. Augusta Elzora Saxbury, 81, of Bowling Green were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Collier Funeral Home in Louisiana. The Rev. Cecil Cox officiated with interment in Riverview Cemetery.

Mrs. Saxbury died Friday, Aug. 2, 1985 in Moore-Pike Nursing Home where she had resided since Oct 2, 1980.

She was born Nov. 14, 1903 in Pittsfield, Il, to Charles Lee and Adelia Young Mitchell. She was married June 15, 1919 to James C. Saxbury in Louisiana. He preceded her in death July 21, 1976. Mr. and Mrs. Saxbury lived in Louisiana before moving to Bowling Green in 1970.

Survivors are two daughters, Annabelle Tyler of Lockport, Il., and Hazel Jennings of Bowling Green, six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Rev. Lewis Mitchell of Quincy, Il., and Rev. Lowell Mitchell of Holdman, Wi., and two sisters, Marie Davis of Hillsboro, Il, and Lorene Latta of Hebers Springs, Ar.

Ruth Mary (Hodges) Viar 1924-1998

Quincy Herald Whig, June 3, 1998 - Liberty, Ill - Ruth M. Viar, 73, of 408 S. Park in Liberty, died at 4:50 a.m. Tuesday (June 2, 1998) in Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

Born Nov. 11, 1924, in Pittsfield, Mrs. Viar was a daughter of Frank Leroy and Anna May Easley Hodges. She married Albert T. Viar June 27, 1942, in Palmyra, Mo.

Mrs. Viar was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Liberty, Liberty Lioness Club, Liberty Historical Society, and the Order of Eastern Star. She also had volunteered at many local American Red Cross blood drives.

Survivors include four sons, Albert Viar Jr. of Quincy, Leroy Viar of Danville, Charles “Pepper” Viar of Nashville, Tenn., and Ronald Viar of Hannibal, Mo.; three daughters, Judy Saxbury and Betty Jo Myers, both of Tulsa, Okla., and Mary Ann Myers of Liberty; 20 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Viar was preceded in death by a son, Andy Grey Viar, who was a twin to Albert Jr.; and a brother James Thomas Hodges.

Services will conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Zion Lutheran Church in Liberty by the Rev. Ronald Graham. Burial will be in Xander Cemetery in Liberty.

Visitation will be held from noon until time of services Thursday in Zion Lutheran Church.

Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross.

The Duker and Haugh Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
