Hannibal Courier Post, July 21, 1943 - Saxbury Boy, 10, Killed In Fall Over High Cliff - Skull Fractured In Accident On Market St. Heights

John Thomas Saxbury, 10, who was living with his grandmother, Mrs. Dora Saxbury, 605 South Hayden street, while his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John T. Saxbury were employed in St. Louis, was killed in a fall over a 60 foot cliff on Market street heights last evening.

The boy disappeared over the cliff about 8 o’clock while playing with two companions, Gene Campbell and Billy Herring, and was found on his left side by the side of a large rock at the foot of the cliff about 45 minutes later by Vernnie Hale, a negro, 2112 Settles street.

He was rushed to Levering hospital and was pronounced dead upon his arrival by Dr. H. B. Goodrich who said he suffered an extensive fracture of the skull.

Coroner William M. Smith who was called after the accident stated an inquest would be unnecessary.

The boy was born in Hannibal May 9, 1933, son of John T. and Edith Salsman Saxbury. He was a member of the Sunday school of the Church of the Nazarene.

Surviving are his parents; his paternal grandmother; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Salsman and great grandmother, Mrs. J. C. Rogers, all of Hannibal.

The remains were removed to Smith’s funeral home and tomorrow morning will be taken to the home of Mrs. Saxbury, 605 South Hayden street. The remains will be returned to the funeral home Friday for services at 2:30 o’clock at Smith’s chapel. Rev. Harlow Reed, pastor of the Church of the Nzarene, will be in charge and burial will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery.

Hannibal Courier Post - July 22, 1943 - Saxbury Remains Are Taken Home

The remains of John Thomas Saxbury, 10, son of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Saxbury, were taken to the family home, 605 South Hayden street, this morning and will stay there until the time of the service, Friday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at Smiths’ chapel. Rev. Harlow Reed, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene, will be in charge and burial will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery.

The boy was killed Tuesday evening when he fell from a high cliff on Market street heights.

Hannibal Courier Post - July 24, 1943 - Saxbury Funeral This Afternoon

With Rev. Harlow Reed, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene in charge, funeral services for John Thomas Saxbury, were held at 2:30 o’clock this afternoon at Smith’s chapel. Mrs. Esther Dickensheets and Mrs. Ruth Dickensheets were vocalists with Miss Bertha Seibel at the organ.

Burial was in Mt. Olivet cemetery with Harold Denkler, Eugene Denkler, Kenneth Salsman and Paul Salsman as pallbearers.
